Cameroon Catalyst is an international development charity focused on promoting sustainable development in the Eastern region of Cameroon, and was founded in 2009.

The charity brings together students, engineers and specialists to develop projects which are carefully researched, well designed and fulfil a real need.

Our mission is to be a catalyst for sustainable change in rural Cameroon. We aim to achieve this by building infrastructure projects which empower local communities, and give them the tools to develop and grow long beyond our projects
Student involvement is at the heart of the charity and crucial to our success. Supported by a team of dedicated trustees, the student teams lead the design, construction and fundraising of the projects and provides fantastic hands-on experience in engineering development and the not-for-profit sector.
Between 2009 and 2014, the charity focused on issues within the village of Bambouti. The work completed made a significant impact on the village, bringing healthcare, improved education and a secure electricity supply.

The Cause

Chronic poverty in Cameroon stands at 26%¹, and only half of the rural population have access to clean water². The Eastern province is one of the most impoverished of the country, and has recently seen an influx of refugees which has only increased the pressure on water resources.

Our Solution

We design projects which are driven by economic, environmental and social sustainability. We seek solutions which empower local communities and remove the need for future support from the charity.

A key part of our projects is the educational training included within the construction of the projects. We often use non-traditional techniques in the construction of projects. It is important that the local communities fully understand the techniques we are using so they can replicate them in future projects.

Project Sustainability

Projects are designed to be self-financing and to operate without future support from the charity.
Our projects aim to minimise the use of imported materials while maximising locally sourced materials.
The projects must empower local communities and minimise the need for external resources or skills.

Our Impact

Developing projects which have long-term impacts on communities.
